Sanctuary installations were inspired by visits to sanctuary sites in Greece and later by Mayan home altars and worship sites in Chiapas, Mexico and the Guatemalan highlands. The earlier works used rolled ceramic forms; later installations used found wood from Baja California and other natural materials. Over time I've realized that my work setting up an art studio in a women's prison with Arts-in-Corrections from 1984-87 was also creating a sanctuary space.
